Die Fukushima-Katastrophe jährt sich

11. März 2011 - 14:46 jap. Zeit - 06:46 deutsche Zeit

Unsere Ev.

Evangelical Mission in Solidarity remembers those affected by
the Fukushima nuclear disaster
It has been two years since the multiple disasters in Japan

Images and reports of the horrors of the 11th March 2011 have returned to the media to mark the anniversary. However, for the people of the affected region the consequences of the tsunami, earthquake and nuclear catastrophe are part of everyday life. The international EMS Fellowship wants to keep the people of Fukushima in their thoughts and calls for them to not be forgotten.

"The children are particularly threatened by the increased radioactivity," explains Lutz Drescher, EMS's East Asia Liaison Secretary. "Parents wonder on a daily basis where they can take their children, what they can give them to eat and how they can protect them." This is why various organisations offer trips to mothers and children, so they can escape the disaster region for a period of time. "We're so glad to come to a place where our children can play safely outdoors, without us constantly worrying," explains one mother. However, it is not just this time off , but also medical care for the children that is especially important. This is why EMS has decided to financially support provisions for thyroid cancer screening at the Radio-Proof Centre in Iwaki, around 30 miles from the damaged nuclear power plant.

Thanks to donations from churches and individuals, EMS has supported a number of projects from the United Church of Christ (KYODAN) and the National Christian Council in Japan in the past two years. This helps, for example, to fund medical examinations for clergy in the affected area and contributions towards nursery places for children from families affected by the disaster. The team from the Spiritual Welfare Centre of the KYODAN, an EMS member church, takes special care of the people who still live in temporary housing. In addition to spiritual support, they also provide volunteers to help. "Many organisations have ended their relief programmes and their supply of volunteers," reports Makoto Iijima from the National Christian Council in Japan. "But we decided to continue working here and are thankful for the support and prayers of our partners worldwide."
