"We will soon be going into our 40th year of operations as the Asian Rural Institute. We started planning for this anniversary five years ago, back in May of 2008. However, at that time we could not have foreseen the many obstacles we would face to achieve this important milestone. 

As you may know, we were in the middle of rebuilding the Farm Shop when eastern Japan was struck by the March 2011 Tohoku Earthquake. Over the last two years, we have had to shift our focus from 40th anniversary matters to post-earthquake reconstruction projects. We have also found ourselves heavily involved in the unfamiliar issue of radioactive pollution and decontamination.

Nonetheless, the amount of support we have been receiving both from within Japan and abroad far exceeds anything we had imagined, and we have managed to continue rebuilding important buildings one after another. In this 2013 training year, we will not simply be celebrating the date when we turn 40, rather it will be a year when we commemorate our outstanding history as we move into a new era for the Asian Rural Institute.  (Tomoko Arakawa, Managing Director)
