EMS-Vollversammlung 7.-10-11.2012

EMS-PRESSEMELDUNG

Internationale EMS-Vollversammlung konstituiert sich in Herrenberg

(Stuttgart, 29.10.2012)

EMS PRESS RELEASE

International EMS General Meeting to be constituted in Herrenberg/Stuttgart

(Stuttgart, 29 October 2012)
The first General Meeting of the Evangelical Mission in Solidarity (EMS), which will be convened from 7-10 November 2012 in Herrenberg (near Stuttgart), represents a further step towards internationalisation. Around 50 delegates from 27 churches and mission societies in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe will elect the new EMS Mission Council and the Presidium. At the beginning of this year a new constitution came into force, and the former "Association of Churches and Missions in South Western Germany" was renamed. The new constitution abolishes the previous differentiation between members in Germany, who were allowed to vote, and their partners overseas. All members of the EMS Fellowship are now legally equal and entitled to vote and stand for election. Besides elections, the adoption of the budget for 2013-14 is on the agenda of the upcoming General Meeting.

Theme of the first EMS General Meeting is "Mission in solidarity – in the power of the Holy Spirit." The keynote speech will be given by the Korean theologian Dr. KEUM Jooseop, Secretary of the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME) at the World Council of Churches (WCC) in Geneva. Current projects and programmes of the EMS Fellowship will be described in short presentations. The main activities of EMS take place in the areas of spreading the Gospel, academic, vocational and theological training and further education, diakonia and social welfare, combating poverty, and the promotion of justice, peace and the integrity of creation. In discussion groups delegates will have the opportunity to share experiences from their different cultural and religious contexts. During an evening of "Meeting and Greeting" the international EMS Fellowship will bid farewell to the long-serving EMS General Secretary, Rev. Bernhard Dinkelaker, who will be going into retirement at the end of 2012.
